All recitals begin at 8:00 P.M.

 
 

The Rules for the Annual International Chopin Piano Competition

  • The competition consists of two stages: Semifinals (by DVD, due the first Friday in December, finalists announced the following Friday) and Finals (performance before the Jury, Saturday, January 16 in 2009)

  • The order of auditions will be determined by drawing numbers prior to the competition.
  • The finals will be held in public. Winners will be annouced and prizes will be awarded 45 minutes following the last audition.  The Winners Recital and the lunch will be held on January 17 at 12:00 p.m at the Corpus Christi Town Club.  The cost of the lunch will be $40 per person.

  • The repertoire requirements of the Competition are based on the first stage of the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland and include the following pieces to be played from memory:

    1. Two Etudes, one from each group below.  At least one must be different from the one perfomed during Preliminary Round.
  • a). C major, Op. 10, No. 1; C-sharp minor, Op. 10, No. 4; G-flat major, Op. 10, No. 5; F major, Op. 10, No. 8; C minor, Op. 10, No. 12; A minor, Op. 25, No. 11
  • b). A minor, Op. 10 , No. 2; C major, Op. 10, No. 7; A-flat major, Op. 10, No. 10; E-flat major, Op. 10, No. 11; A minor, Op. 25, No. 4; E minor, Op. 25, No. 5; G-sharp minor, Op. 25, No 6; B minor, Op. 25, No. 10
  • One fo the following nocturnes:
  • B major, Op. 9, No. 3; D-flat major, Op. 27, No. 2; G major, Op. 37, No. 2; C minor, Op 48, No. 1; F-sharp minor, Op 48, No. 2; E-flat major, Op. 55, No. 2; B major, Op. 62, No. 2
  • A ballade or barcarole F-sharp major Op. 60 or Fantasie F minor Op. 49
  • One of the following waltzes:
  • E flat major, Op. 18; A-flat major Op. 42; A-flat major, Op. 34, No. 1: A-flat major, Op. 64, No. 3; F major, Op. 34, No. 3
  • One or more of the following pieces or sets:
  • Allegro de concert in A major, Op. 46; Berceuse D-flat major, Op. 57; Bolero C major, Op. 19
  • One or more Etudes of the conestants' choosing, excluding those he/she performed in the preliminary and stage auditions (see point 1 section X)
  • (If the contestant chooses, Etudes de la Methode des Methodes, the whole cycle has to be played in its original order: F minor, No. 1; A-flat major, No. 2; D-flat major, No. 3)
  • Impromptu A-flat major, Op. 29; Impromptu G-flat major, Op. 51; Impromptu F-sharp major, Op. 36; Nocturne C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 1
  • Preludes from Opus 28: group a or b or c, or two consecutive groups - a and b or b and c
  • a). A major, No. 7
  • Prelude C-sharp minor, Op. 45
  • Rondo C minor, Op. 1
  • Rondo a la Mazur F major, Op. 5
  • Rondo E-flat major, Op. 16
  • Scherzo B minor, Op. 20
  • Scherzo B-flat minor, Op. 31
  • Scherzo C-sharp minor, Op. 39
  • Scherzo E major, Op. 54
  • Tarantella A-flat major, Op. 43
  • Waltz A minor, Op. 34, No. 2
  • Waltz D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1
  • Waltz C-sharp minor, Op. 64, No. 2
  • Variation B-flat major, Op. 12 on the theme "Je vends des Scapulaires"

  • All decisions made by the Jury are final

  • The winners will be awarded the following prizes:
  • First Prize
  • Second Prize
  • Third Prize
  • Honorable Mention

Other prizes maybe announced later. The Fryderyk Chopin Society of Texas, Inc. reservers the right to award the First Prize Winner with an engagement for a double performance in the following concert season of the Chopin Society.
The prize winners receive the title of Winners of the Seventeenth Annual International Chopin Piano Competition sponsored by the Fryderyk Chopin Society of Texas, Inc.
